Portland Fire Responds to Residential Fire in Cully Neighborhood
Portland Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a possible house fire in the Cully Neighborhood of NE Portland shortly after 2:15 PM this afternoon. Reports of a fire on the front porch that was extending to the home. The first arriving engine confirmed fire upon arrival with the report that the front of the house did have fire present along with the enclosed exterior porch area.
Water supply was established with a fire hydrant located across the street and an offensive fire attack was directed. Quick extinguishment of the exterior fire occurred but by the smoke pushing out of the roof, it was evident the fire had extended into the attic of the main residence.
Crews took hand lines interior and pulled ceiling to access the fire which was burning the blown in insulation material in the attic space. Vertical ventilation holes were cut in the roof to allow for the smoke to exit and to gain more access to any burning material.
Primary and Secondary searches of the structure confirmed all residents were out of the home safely. Solar panels on the roof were avoided by crews as they were away from the area of fire and not in any danger to the firefighters working on the roof.
The fire was considered under control shortly after the 10-minute timer hit from the dispatch center. Crews are on scene removing any charred attic insulation while trying to preserve a few rooms as best possible that were only slightly affected by the fire.
Two adults will be displaced. Multiple chickens were lost that resided in a coop on the front porch in the fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be a heat lamp igniting wood shavings within the chicken coop.
